Swine Flu Redux?

I thought the "swine flu" had run its course. But I guess I was wrong. At the airport when I flew in I had to fill out a health form asking me a bunch of questions such as "Do I feel ill? Have a fever? etc." I then handed the form to a masked agent who briefly read it over and put it in a pile. I though that was the last of it.

Earlier this week, schools across Guatemala were shut down. I have heard 2 versions of this story. The first version is that the shutdown is part of a nationwide strategy to curb any resergence in the disease. The other story is that the schools were slated to close anyway for a brief recess in the normal schedule.

I can't say what the real story is. But according to the AP story linked above 11 people in the last 24 hours have become infected.

  1. The WHO recently declared a Swine Flu pandemic, so I guess it's back. I'm just hoping it gets under control soon. Stay safe.

  2. One of my best friends from A&M just contracted the virus.

Fortunately it looks like it's really just a bad flu, nothing crazy that causes a cytokine storm like the 1918 flu. That would be really scary, cause then it would more likely kill the healthy than the sick/weak.

From what my friend sad the flu was actually kind of nice, she's now 1/2 way towards her goal of her ideal weight.

  3. 36,000 people die EVERY YEAR in the U.S. from the regular flu. Swine flu has killed less than 50. I think we'll be OK!

  4. I've talked with a couple of (local) people who believe the flu is a conspiracy between the government and the pharmaceutical companies.
